 Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the SharePoint Learning Kit and how is it related to Microsoft Learning Gateway?

A.  The SharePoint Learning Kit (SLK) is a tool that lets educators create an assignment out of any   document in a SharePoint Docement Library.  SLK provides the basic ability to assign, track, and grade e-learning content to learners.  Microsoft Learning Gateway uses SLK as a means of managing the cycle of online assignments including delivery and tracking of the elearning content.

 Q. Will SLK replace a Learning Management System (LMS)?

A.  SLK is not a Learning Management System.  It can be a component in a partner-delivered LMS.  It can also be a stand-alone e-learning tool for SharePoint 2007.

Q. What type of document files will SLK handle?

A.  SLK can handle Microsoft Office documents, media files, PDF files, and any other document in a SharePoint Document Library.

Q. What applications integrate with MLG and SLK to offer enhancements in the area of education and training?

A.  There are plenty of third party applications because of the (Ms-CL) agreement and ease of extendibility by MS Partners.  Microsoft has released Silverlight and is still working on a project codename GRAVA.  Silverlight is a plug-in designed to deliver the next generation of .NET based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web.  GRAVA is an application that will allow the education community to author, assemble, and present rich-interactive content.  Expect a late 2008 or early 2009 release.

Q.   Is there a cost associated with SLK?

A.  SLK has been released to the Shared Source Programs at no cost under the Microsoft Community License (Ms-CL) agreement.  This makes it possible for partners to work directly with the source code to build solutions tailored to meet customer’s needs.

Q.  What is SCORM and how does it relate to SLK?

A.  (SCORM=Sharable Content Object Reference Model)  It has become the most widely accepted standard for Learning Content in the world.  SLK fully supports SCORM 2004 and SCORM 1.2.

Q. Where do I get support for SharePoint Learning Kit?

A.  SharePoint Learning Kit is a community source project.  As such, product support is provided via a community at CodePlex.com/slk.  While Microsoft engineers are actively involved in the community development and leadership, Microsoft product support does not provide support for SharePoint Learning Kit.

Q.  How can I get more details about SLK?
